It is a fair worry. Taking the roof off a room in January sounds like asking for trouble. In practice a conservatory roof swap is one of the few outdoor jobs that suits winter well, as long as the fitters respect the weather. The work is short, the room is closed in every night, and you feel the difference on the very first evening.
Why winter is a good time, not a bad one
- You notice the change at once. A roof fitted in December has a whole heating season to earn its keep. One fitted in May waits months to prove itself.
- Less competition for dates. Search interest in roof panels across the UK drops to its lowest point of the year in December, which can make fitting dates easier to get.
- Summer heat is sorted before summer. A roof on by March means July afternoons stop being a write-off.
- The job is short. 1 day for a small roof, 1 to 2 for medium, 2 to 3 for large. A two week dry spell is not needed, just the right day.
The rules we work to between November and March
- We watch the forecast from 48 hours out. If rain is due during the hours the roof is open, the date moves. We would rather ring you a day early than bail out your living room.
- We strip in sections. Only the part of the roof we can panel before dark comes off. On a two or three day job, each evening ends with the room weathertight.
- We wait for frost and dew to burn off. Sealants and tapes need a dry surface, and most need the air above about 5°C to bond properly. On a white frosty morning we start inside with the preparation and move outside once the frame is dry.
- We stay off the roof in strong gusts. A large panel catches wind like a sail. If gusts are strong enough to make that a risk, the day waits.
- Snow means a later date. We do not work on a roof with snow or ice on it, full stop.
- We carry temporary sheeting. If a shower arrives that nobody forecast, the open section is covered in minutes.
How much daylight there is to work with
The shortest day is the real limit, because we want the roof closed while we can still see the seals clearly. These are approximate figures for 21 December.
| Place | Sunrise | Sunset | Daylight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cardiff | About 8.15am | About 4.05pm | About 7 h 50 m |
| London | About 8.05am | About 3.55pm | About 7 h 50 m |
| Birmingham | About 8.15am | About 3.55pm | About 7 h 40 m |
| Manchester | About 8.25am | About 3.50pm | About 7 h 25 m |
| Newcastle | About 8.30am | About 3.40pm | About 7 h 10 m |
| Glasgow | About 8.45am | About 3.45pm | About 7 h |
Seven hours is enough to take a small roof off and close it in. On a medium or large roof in Glasgow in December, a job that might take one long summer day is planned as two shorter ones. You get the same roof, over a slightly longer booking. For local conditions before your date, the Met Office forecast is what we check too.
What winter means for your house on the day
The conservatory itself gets cold while the roof is open, so move plants, pets and anything that minds the cold into the house. Keep the door between the house and the conservatory shut all day and the rest of the home stays warm. Heating can stay on as normal.
Once the panels are in and the trims sealed, the room is ready to use that evening. The panels arrive with a finished white underside, so there is no plaster to dry out and no decorating to wait for.
The first cold night: a worked example
Take a 4 m by 3 m Edwardian with a roof of about 13 m² in 25 mm polycarbonate. On a still January night the garden sits at 0°C and the room is set to 19°C. Heat loss through the roof is U-value x area x temperature difference.
| What is overhead | U-value | Watts escaping |
|---|---|---|
| 25 mm polycarbonate | About 1.6 | About 395 W |
| Insulated panels, 75 mm core | About 0.43 | About 106 W |
That gap of roughly 290 W is like leaving a small electric heater on full just to replace what the roof lets out. Over a 12 hour evening and night, it adds up to about 3.5 kWh, around 91p on electricity at 26.32p a kWh, the Ofgem cap for October to December 2026. Across a whole heating season, with England averaging about 2,150 degree days, the roof alone saves around 785 kWh, or about £206 a year on electric heating.
Your own figures depend on roof size and what covers it today. If yours is old glass rather than polycarbonate, read replacing a glass roof; if it is sheets, replacing a polycarbonate roof has the details.
Timing it around Christmas
Panels are made to measure, and they take 3 to 5 weeks to arrive after survey. Work backwards from the date you want the room ready.
- To be fitted before Christmas, aim to have the survey done by about mid November.
- A survey in the first week of December usually means fitting in January.
- Planning a family gathering in the conservatory? Leave a week of slack for a weather move.
A solid roof brings building control in, as the conservatory exemption no longer applies. We lodge the application while the panels are made, so the winter paperwork runs at the same pace as a summer job. The full sequence is on our how we work page, and how long a roof replacement takes sets out the weeks in a table.
When we would say wait
Winter is fine for most roofs. It is not ideal when the survey finds frame repairs that need a run of dry days, such as a dwarf wall to rebuild, or when the house wall above the roof needs repointing before new flashing goes on. In those cases we tell you, and often the repair goes first in autumn and the roof follows.

Questions
Is it too cold to fit conservatory roof panels in winter?
No. Cold alone does not stop us. We wait for frost and dew to clear so the seals bond, and we move the date for rain, snow or strong gusts.
What happens if it rains halfway through the job?
We carry temporary sheeting and cover the open section straight away. We also only strip as much roof as we can close in the same day.
Will my house get cold while the roof is off?
Keep the door to the conservatory shut and the house stays warm. Only the conservatory itself cools down while it is open.
Can I use the conservatory the evening it is fitted?
Yes. The underside of each panel comes finished in white, so there is nothing to plaster, dry or paint.
