Conservatory roof blinds or a replacement roof: which one earns its money?

Which is the real problem: the light, or the roof? That one question settles most blinds against roof decisions. Blinds are good at controlling light and privacy. They are not good at stopping heat, leaks or noise. A replacement roof does the opposite set of jobs. Work out which list your complaints are on and the choice gets much easier.

What each one changes

Complaint Roof blinds Insulated panel roof
Glare on the TV or laptop Fixes it Fixes it
Too hot on sunny afternoons Helps a little; the sun has already come through Blocks the sun from above entirely
Too cold in winter Small help while closed Large improvement, U-value about 0.43
Rain drumming on the roof No real change Much quieter, thanks to the 75 mm foam core
Leaks or slipping sheets Hides them Removes them, the old roof goes
Yellowed or dirty roof Hides it from inside Replaced
Daylight You choose, blind open or shut From the walls, plus roof lights
Cleaning Fabric gathers dust and insects Wipe clean white ceiling

The winter sum

Take a 4 m by 3.5 m Edwardian on a 1990s semi, with a roof of about 15.5 m² in 16 mm polycarbonate. Yearly heat loss is U-value times area times degree days (about 2,150 in England) times 24, over 1,000. Energy is at the October to December 2026 Ofgem cap: 26.32p a kWh for electricity and 7.97p for gas, burned in a 90% efficient boiler.

No blind turns a clear roof into an insulated one, but closed fabric does trap a layer of air. To be generous to blinds, we have assumed they stop a third of the roof's heat loss for every hour they are shut. In real life gaps at the edges and blinds left open reduce that.

Roof on the 15.5 m² example Working U-value Heat lost a year Electric cost Gas cost
16 mm polycarbonate, no blinds About 2.3 About 1,840 kWh About £484 About £163
16 mm polycarbonate, blinds always shut About 1.5 About 1,230 kWh About £323 About £109
Insulated panels About 0.43 About 345 kWh About £91 About £30

Even on those generous terms, the blinds leave the roof losing about three and a half times as much heat as panels would.

Ten years, side by side

Made-to-measure pleated roof blinds for a room this size are commonly quoted somewhere between £1,000 and £3,000, depending on fabric and fitting. We have used £2,000 as a midpoint. Get a written quote and swap in your own figure. For the panels we have used the midpoint of our medium Edwardian band, £4,200 to £4,950.

Over ten years Blinds under the old roof Insulated panel roof
Price on the day About £2,000 About £4,575
Roof heat, electric heating About £3,230 About £910
Total, electric heating About £5,230 About £5,485
Roof heat, gas heating About £1,090 About £300
Total, gas heating About £3,090 About £4,875

So on pure cost, blinds come out ahead. On electric heating the two are close to level after ten years. On gas, blinds are around £1,800 cheaper. That is the honest result.

What the sum leaves out: the old roof keeps ageing above the blinds. Polycarbonate that is already yellow or slipping may need replacing within those ten years anyway, and then you pay for a roof as well as the blinds. That panel figure already covers taking the old roof away, any RAL colour, the building control paperwork and a guarantee lasting 10 years.

When blinds are the better buy

  • Your roof is modern low-e glass at 1.0 to 1.2, sound and dry.
  • Glare, privacy or fading furniture are the main complaints, not cold.
  • You use the room mostly from spring to autumn.
  • You love the view of the sky and want to keep it.

In those cases, blinds are a sensible, cheaper answer, and we would tell you so at survey.

When the roof itself is the problem

  • It leaks, or you have buckets out when it rains.
  • Sheets have slipped towards the gutter.
  • It is 16 mm polycarbonate, or glass fitted before 2002 at about 2.8.
  • The room is empty from November to March.
  • Rain is loud enough to stop a conversation.
  • Condensation drips from the roof on cold mornings.

If two or more of these ring true, blinds will make the room look better without making it work better. See replacing a polycarbonate roof or replacing a glass roof for how the swap goes.

Living with blinds: the small print

Roof blinds are fitted along the glazing bars and run in tensioned tracks. Fabric in direct sun fades over the years, and cords and runners can wear. Condensation on a cold roof can drip onto the fabric and leave marks. Cleaning usually means a soft brush or a vacuum on low, blind by blind, while standing on steps. None of this rules them out, but it belongs in the comparison.

Can you have both?

Yes, and many people end up there. With a panel roof there is no need for roof blinds at all, because the roof blocks the sun. Blinds on the side windows still help with low morning or evening sun. If you add glazed roof lights, £395 apiece, a small blind for a roof light is a cheap way to control that one patch of sky.

Questions

Can you put blinds on a conservatory roof?

Yes. Pleated roof blinds are made to fit between the glazing bars and run in tensioned tracks. They control glare and privacy well, but do little for heat loss, leaks or rain noise.

Do conservatory roof blinds keep heat in during winter?

A little, while they are shut and sealed at the edges. Even assuming a one third cut, a 16 mm polycarbonate roof would still lose over three times the heat of a 0.43 panel roof.

Will I need roof blinds after a panel roof is fitted?

No. The panels stop direct sun through the roof. Some people add a small blind to a roof light, or blinds on the side windows for low sun.

Are blinds cheaper than a new conservatory roof?

On the day, usually yes. Over ten years on electric heating, our worked example came out close to level, and on gas blinds stayed about £1,800 cheaper.
